"There's nothing more exciting!"

Hilla Ben-Meir has been an apprentice instructor at the Center since September, and is training her first class of dogs with Roee Rosen, who is her instructor. She and Roee will select a group of qualified dogs for the next course, which will begin March 1st. Hilla will help on the course as an observer, since this is her first class of dogs and instruction course. "Roee and I work together and I'm also receiving lectures from Rafi about training dogs and instruction of blind clients. I really enjoy my work with the dogs and it's wonderful to see their progress. Roee is an extremely professional instructor and I'm learning a lot from him and we are getting great results." Before joining the staff at the Center, Hilla worked with horses and instructed blind riders. "I think my former work will help a lot. Communication with animals is very similar even if we are talking about different animals. One day I hope to own a horse, and teach it using the clicker technique." Hilla feels extremely attached to the group of dogs she is training together with Roee. "When I arrive in the morning they're excited to see me and it's very rewarding. There's nothing more rewarding." What lies ahead? After the course in March a new class of dogs will arrive from their adoptive families, and Hilla will begin training them. "I'm happy working at the Center," she reports. "The goals of the Center are significant."

Raising Puppies Here and Abroad

Ephraim Siedman and Bunny Wilks have just returned to the United States after spending several months here, but no matter whether they were on this side of the Atlantic or the other, they were busy raising guide dog puppies! "We raised three puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind in New York, USA. Upon coming to Israel for an extended stay in spring 2014, we contacted the IGDCB about being puppy raisers. We initially doggy sat Harry, a working guide dog while his human partner was recovering from an illness. Then we sat Alpha, a breeding female. She recently had three beautiful puppies. And then we had the honor of being Amy's puppy raisers. Amy came from Freedom Dogs for the Blind in upstate New York. When we got her, we were amazed at what a quick learner she is. Walking to Machane Yehuda and the Old City gave her the opportunity to work in crowded situations and she was a champ. Now that Amy has returned to the IGDCB for her formal training, we are excited about what her future holds. We are very proud of her and thrilled that the IGDCB gave us this wonderful opportunity. We at the Center want to thank you, Bunny and Ephraim, for all you have done for both the IGDCB and for guide dogs both near and far! We hope you will be back soon to see Amy as a working guide dog! Photo shows Noach, Orna, Eli, Dana, Ephraim, and Bunny with Any איימי הגיעה מ – Freedom Dogs for the Blind במדינת ניו יורק.

Netanel Elbaz is Certified as a Mobility Teacher for the Blind Using Guide Dogs

Netanel Elbaz began working at the Center close to five years ago, and completed his certification as both a guide dog trainer and a mobility teacher for the blind. Today Netanel has completed his certification as a Mobility Teacher for the Blind using Guide Dogs, and received his certificate from Noach and Ami. The fact that Netanel has combined these two qualifications enables him to have a broad and intensive perception of the world of mobility for blind clients. "I'm well acquainted with mobility using a white cane, with various eye disorders, and the 'language' used in cane mobility," explained Netanel. "Being familiar with the cues from the surroundings that we use when working with a cane allows me to perceive the advantages and disadvantages of a cane versus a guide dog for mobility. There are many cues that a blind person receives when working with a cane. A guide dog simply leads a person around these cues, so a; guide dog user does not receive them in the same manner that a cane user does. Not all the instructors at the center have received certification as mobility instructors, but Netanel plans to share his knowledge with others in the instruction staff. Using the clues with which he is familiar from the world of white cane training can help while working with a dog. People can be taught which clues to take advantage of and which to ignore. Netanel received his certificate from Ami and Rafi at the general staff meeting last week. "Five years ago I began looking for work and I can't believe that I am now working at this wonderful place. I enjoy coming to work each day, not only because of my work but because of the staff. Netanel thanked Rafi and Ami for their support and instruction throughout his training period. Netanel is now beginning to train a new class of guide dogs. We wish him the best of luck in the future!
