Guide dogs need their keen eyes, sharp ears,
and four healthy legs to effectively do their important job. Sometimes things go wrong, and expert
veterinary help is needed to help a sick dog return to work. When
Twist's handler came home and found that his dog could not stand up and was
unable to move his hind legs, he immediately called for help. Twist was taken to the veterinary clinic at
Kfar HaYarok where he underwent extensive examinations, including an MRI. The examination revealed that the cause of
the problem was a fibro cartilaginous embolism in the dog's spinal cord. Since Twist could not work or return home to
his owner's apartment, he was hospitalized in the kennels at the Center. He was given pharmaceutical treatment and
slowly began to recover and gain the use of his hind legs again.

After
Twist was sufficiently recovered he was able to return to his handler's home
and to engage in limited activities.
Twist is now working well, but hesitates when climbing stairs. He is receiving physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to help him grow
stronger and recuperate. We wish Twist a full and speedy recovery!
Riders from the three Canvelo biking clubs, "Eynayim L'Shnayim" from the Upper Galilee, and "Galgal Ofan" from Kiryat Motzkin were there to tackle the rugged desert terrain in two competitive rides.. Many graduates from the Center and their teammates from all three Canvelo groups won trophies this year in all the age and gender categories. After two days of competition the tandem bikers set out on a 20-kilometer non-competitive bike ride in the area of Timna. Below: Canvelo riders together in the desert near Timna, riders from the center group and northern group displaying trophies won in the competition.
I am writing a personal post this week to share my
thrilling first tour of the new campus that I took with Dennis and my guide dog
Dinka. It is hard to believe that only last
December we were standing amid rubble and dirt on the East Side pouring
spadefuls of concrete into a hole in the ground at the festive cornerstone
laying ceremony. It is now eight months
later and the East Side has been transformed into a state-of-the-arts guide dog
school training and puppy development campus!

We began the tour at the place where the sidewalk of the present
campus joins the new path leading to the new campus. Here there will be a statue of a Labrador
retriever and a dog memorial garden, and a new tree is already growing in the
area.

We continued on to the dog exercise run where there is a
lawn and a safe fenced in area for dogs to run free. This is a great area for trainees to practice letting their dogs off leash and teaching them recall as well as letting them relax and have fun.

The training campus includes a new obstacle course with a
shaded area for hot summer days or rainy weather, and a simulated crosswalk
where trainees can learn how to navigate a city crosswalk and stoplight before
they experience the real thing with traffic in town. Dinka stopped neatly at the crosswalk and
then had fun running through the elaborate maze – a challenging game for dogs
to learn recall and find their way back to their handlers.

The old puppy house is now converted into an elaborate breeding
facility with modern rooms and equipment for mother dogs to give birth and
remain with their litters until the puppies are ready to leave for their
adopted families. Dinka eagerly explored
the new kennels and building with its yards adjoining every two cells in the
kennel.

The staff is currently getting organized to handle the
additional work that the new kennels and additional dogs will entail, including
hiring an additional staff member to help with dog care in the kennels.

There are many expressions of thanks to convey to many
people, and we hope that many friends, donors, and supporters will be with us
to dedicate the new campus next April!

In other news, last Thursday the staff bid a fond farewell
to four of the six National Community service workers who have been an
inseparable and valuable part of life at the Center: Inbar and Haviva left us
after two years of dedicated work in the kennels, and Shani and Hilla who also
worked in the kennels left after working with us for the past year. Vered and Eden will remain with us. Each of
the young women received a gift of a framed photo with one of the dogs she
cared for, and there were many tears of sadness at the parting. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to these
young women for their dedicated work, and wish them all best of luck and
success in whatever they pursue in the future!

New puppies begin their year with adoptive families.

It's a big and exciting day when our puppies are ready to leave their mothers and
begin their year with their adoptive families! By the age of 8 weeks they have already been exposed to various stimuli, walked on
different surfaces and stairs, and begun to explore the world. Now they are ready to begin learning the skills that will prepare them to be guide dogs in the future. Many of them will be raised by university students at various academic institutions, where they will learn to sit quietly in class.

Last Friday puppies were distributed to their adoptive families at a
special event on campus. Before they
left, some of our older, more experienced dogs showed these little puppies how
it's done!

Good luck to puppies and
families, and we hope to see all these puppies as full-fledged guide dogs in
two years!

Volunteers have always played an important part in the daily life of the Center. They help in the kennels and
kitchen, provide leisure activities for course participants, help in the
office, guide tours for visitors, run errands, and ride with the Canvelo
cycling clubs. Some raise puppies and
foster pension guide dogs. They are
everywhere every day, and they deserve our thoughts and appreciation!

Gal Lee Danon, who is in charge of volunteers, decided it is time for us
to show our appreciation of the work our volunteers do and to get to know them
better. She prepares a short PowerPoint
presentation about one or two of our volunteers to be presented at the monthly
staff meetings. The presentations show
each volunteer, what they do at the center and outside it, their hobbies, and
interests. This month Gal Lee presented
two of our volunteers: Nancy and Eyal.

Thanks to Gal Lee for her important work and for the thoughtful way of
getting to know our volunteers better!

In other news, work on the construction has been renewed and is progressing rapidly. Against the background of construction noise dogs are taken to train in the early morning to avoid the summer heat, visitors from Israel and abroad tour the center as families take their children on vacation, and a special summer course will begin next week with three experienced graduates receiving replacement dogs. We wish everyone success! Drink lots of water, keep cool! Here is a short video taken by Noach. As you can see, despite the heat, life at the Center is thriving!
The group included six graduates of the Center and their guide dogs and escorts, an additional blind participant and his escort, the tour coordinator, and guide.
During our six day visit to Poland we toured centers of Jewish life in Warsaw, Lublin, and Krakow, and visited Treblinka, Majdanek, Auschwitz, and Birkenau. Blind members of the group were able to perceive these places by touching and by listening to vivid descriptions offered by the guide and their escorts. The group conducted a small memorial ceremony at the crematorium in Birkenau and members lit a candle and read or recited names of family members who were murdered in the Holocaust. The visit ended with the March of the living on Holocaust and Heroism Memorial Day on April 24th. All of us felt that the visit was a difficult but meaningfuland enlightening experience and that the six days that we spent together in Poland helped us to better understand this period in our history that was characterized by unspeakable evil conducted by the Nazis as well as heroic deeds of Jews and those who aided them.
We wish everyone in Israel and abroad a joyous Pesach holiday! This week the center hosted many visitors who took advantage of the school vacation to arrive with families and children. Visits took place against the background of the rapidly rising new kennel and puppy development center building under construction.

This week the six center graduates, their escorts and tour guide met for a one-day preparatory seminar at the Yad VaShem Museum to prepare for the 5th mission to Poland sponsored by the Center. The group leaves Wednesday morning for a six-day tour of historical sites in Warsaw, Krakow, and other cities that will culminate with the March of the Living from Auschwitz to Birkenau on Holocaust Memorial Day April 24th. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16829468807226608048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1384004371392216992.post-45787222717944417172017-03-23T05:28:00.000-07:002017-03-23T11:24:46.626-07:00Our Staff on a Day Off in RamlaRamla is a Jewish - Arab city only a half hour's drive from the Center, but it's one of those places in Israel that many people overlook. On Wednesday the entire center staff took the day off for a guided tour of Ramla. We soon learned that Ramla is a colorful multi - ethnic city with a fascinating history.
We began the tour at the Great Mosque where our guide gave us a short history of the building, which was originally built as a Basilica. We then continued into the marketplace where we tasted samples of some of the local cuisine. From there we walked to the White Tower and then descended into an underground cavern where we rowed about in small boats beneath the arched ceiling. By that time we were all hungry and so we made our way to a Bukharin restaurant to end the day with lunch.
Thanks to Efrat for organizing the fun day!
Each year at Purim the staff takes a couple of hours to dress up, goof
off, and have fun. This year's
celebration began with a festive holiday meal prepared by Ruthi that was
enjoyed by everyone. After that the
trainers stopped training, the kennel staff left the dogs to take an afternoon
nap in their kennels, the office staff stopped answering phones and typing, and
we all gathered in the auditorium as each member of the staff made an entrance
in costume.

Much of the party – which was meticulously planned and conducted by
Efrat - was spent attempting to solve a mystery quiz that pitted our logic and mental
stamina!

The staff was transformed into clowns, Lego bricks, a pregnant nun, a
bottle of ketchup, and other elaborate costumes.

The three winners in the costume contest were the Community Service
workers dressed as Dalmatians, Rafi dressed as Efrat, and Zipi dressed as
Noach. Many thanks to Ruthi and Efrat for planning and arranging a
wonderful Purim celebration!

ELIYA (The Israel Organization for Blind Children) operates several kindergartens in Israel for children with blindness or visual impairments that have been cooperating
with the Center for several years. Volunteers
from the Center visit the kindergartens each week with guide dog puppies, retired guide
dogs, or career change dogs. The
children have the opportunity to pet the dogs and experience the companionship
that dogs offer. We believe that developing a trusting
relationship with dogs at a young age will prepare these children for a relationship
with a companion dog at home, and encourage them to adopt a guide
dog in the distant future.

A new ELIYA kindergarten opened in Rehovot two weeks ago, and Brig. Gen.
(ret) Moti Regev, a long-time volunteer at the Center and founder of the
Canvelo cycling club, and his son Ofer volunteered to visit the kindergarten. Ofer visits the kindergarten each week with Daria, a
retired breeding dog who lives with the Regev family and is Ofer's
companion. Volunteering at the ELIYA
kindergarten is Daria's second career, and she does the job happily. Ofer gives the children warm hugs and a ride in his wheelchair, while Daria does her part by offering children the cuddly love and warmth that
dogs have to give!
Dalmatians have traditionally been associated with firefighters. The speckled, robust dogs ran alongside
horse-drawn firefighters' wagons, clearing the road of other carriages, people,
and animals so firefighters could get through.
Since then they have served as mascots in fire stations and are often used
as an icon in many educational programs for teaching children fire prevention
and safety. It is no wonder that the Hero in You Foundation decided to adopt
the Dalmatian as its symbol.

The Hero in You Foundation was founded by Bunni and Rick Benaron of
California following the events of 2001.
The foundation's objective is to honor first responders, who help in
emergencies, and to teach children that they, too, can be heroes and perform
good deeds to help others. The
foundation has erected numerous Dalmatian puppy statues in fire stations,
schools, and parks throughout the United States to deliver the message that
anyone can help others and perform heroic acts.

When the foundation offered the Center a donation of one of their
colorful Dalmatian puppy statues, we decided that to place it in the nearby
city of Yavneh where the important message would reach as many children and
parents as possible. In 2016 a Dalmatian
puppy statue was placed in the city park in the "Green Neighborhood"
in Yavneh. The expansive park has lawns, a pond, play equipment, and a dog park
directly opposite the statue.

The center has joined the education department of the Yavneh municipality
in launching an educational project that combines ideas of heroism,
relationships between people and dogs, and the importance of our guide dogs in
helping people with blindness and visual impairments overcome their disability. The program, which was written by center
graduate Bracha Ben-Avraham, is being presented to schools and kindergartens in
Yavneh. It's part of our effort to get
our message across about the importance our heroic dogs are in improving the
lives of blind and visually impaired people.

On February 9th the program was presented to two
kindergartens in Yavneh, and the mayor of Yavneh Zvi Gov Ari, Noach Braun,
Dennis Allon, and Bracha Ben Avraham and her guide dog Dinka and the children posed
for photos next to the Dalmatian statue in the park.

In addition to the usual reports of upcoming courses, activities, and news,
today's staff meeting was marked by an exciting moment as Noach presented Yoav Ortov
with his diploma certifying him as a guide dog mobility instructor. Yoav began his apprenticeship in May 2013 and later spent six months at the
Oregon Campus of Guide Dogs of America, where he learned many techniques and
methods that he shared with his colleagues upon his return. Yoav completed his final examinations of the
International Guide Dog Federation to complete his training. Upon receiving his diploma Yoav remarked,
"I can't think of any work more rewarding than what I am doing here." Congratulations to Yoav and success in his
future work with us!

The staff also said goodbye to Yaniv Ben David, a volunteer from Munich who
spent the past several weeks working in the kennels. Yaniv, who loves dogs, is the son of an
Israeli family who became acquainted with the center through his grandparents
who are acquainted with center graduate Gadi Yarkoni. We wish Yaniv best of
luck and hope to see him and other enthusiastic volunteers at the center in the
future.

Since 2009 the Center has employed the clicker training method, which is based upon the idea of positive reinforcement of good behavior. The method uses a clicker that makes a distinctive click to "mark" good behavior, followed by a food reward. Puppies and guide dogs in training learn faster with this method and are highly motivated to do their job as guide dogs. Our guide dog users are also taught to use clicker training to reinforce good behavior and to teach their dogs to locate useful locations such as the entrance to the bank or grocery store, and to lead their handlers to useful objects such as an empty seat on the train platform, a mailbox, or even an ATM machine.
What is more useful for a puppy walker or a guide dog handler than a bag to store treats when working outside? Students from Jewish schools in London and Manchester provided a useful solution for carrying treats: They decorated small zippered treat bags for our puppies in training. Each bag is decorated with a student's drawing or puppy's name.
The landscape of the east side has changed from an empty parking area to
a building site, and the noise of construction has accompanied daily life at
the center for the past month. We officially
marked the beginning of the construction of the new Puppy Training and
Development Center on Thursday, December 22nd with a festive and
moving cornerstone laying ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by over 80 staff members, graduates, volunteers,
supporters, and officials. Noach opened
the ceremony by noting the significance of the date, which is adjacent to the
first night of Chanukah when he first met Norman Leventhal, co-founder of the
center in 1986, thirty years ago. The
main speaker at the ceremony was Shmuel Weinglass, Director of the National
Insurance Institute Fund for the Development of Services for Persons with
Disabilities that pledged financial support for the construction of the new
campus. Michael Leventhal, Executive Director of the Friends Organization in
the U.S. spoke on behalf of our Friends organizations abroad, and Haim Shwartz,
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the IGDCB spoke on behalf of the Board
and Guide Dog users. Among the many
VIP's that attended were: Martin Segal, Executive Director of the UK Friends,
Guy Simchi, Director of Disability Services for the Histadrut Labor Union,
Michael Segal, Chairman of Eliya, Amos Beer, Director of the Central Library
for the Blind, and Gila Zaidel from Ofek Liyladen. After the speeches and a
short musical interlude guests lined up to sign the two scrolls – one of which
was buried in the concrete foundations of the new building and the other which
will be hung in the building upon its completion.

Trees have been cut down, fences have been removed, there is noise and there will be chaos on campus, but we are happy: the construction of the new kennels and Puppy Breeding and Development Center is finally beginning!

This coming Thursday we will be holding a festive cornerstone laying ceremony for the new kennel and puppy breeding and development center. The ceremony will be attended by the staff, friends, supporters, Mike Leventhal, his wife Sue, and his son Joel who will be joining us from the United States, and Martin Segal, Director of British Friends who will be arriving from London.

We look forward to this giant step in the enter's expansion and development that will enable us to provide more guide dogs in the future!
The annual event, sponsored by the Hapoel Sport Association, is attended by thousands of athletes from dozens of companies and businesses throughout the country who compete in a large number of individual and team sports. This year's Sportiada featured a new event: a two-day tandem cycling competition. This is the first time in its 36-year history that the Sportiada has featured an event for athletes with disabilities. The tandem race consequently constitutes a major landmark in the history of sports in Israel. Approximately 50 couples participated in the race - an amazingly large number of tandem bikes even by international standards.
The 100 tandem riders included cyclists from the three Central, Sharon, and Northern Canvelo cycling clubs, as well as riders from "Aynayim L'Shnayim" (Eyes for Two) - a group from the upper Galilee and "Galgal Or" (Wheel of Light) from the Lighthouse for the Blind near Haifa.
The 10 and 20 kilometer routes in the two races were equally challenging to those designated for single bike riders, and demanded high levels of technique and skill. Riders had to cope with the rugged desert terrain that featured sand, gravel, steep climbs, dizzying downhill slopes, crevasses, and boulders.
Aside from the excitement, sportsmanship, and camaraderie that prevailed during the competition itself, the tandem biking event in the Sportiada made a significant impact upon the thousands of athletes gathered in Eilat for the event. The presence of a dozen guide dogs at the opening ceremony drew a great deal of attention - exposing the thousands of athletes to the idea that people with disabilities can excel in sports and be part of the Sportiada as equal participants.
The introduction of the tandem cycling competition to the Sportiada was promoted by Brig. Gen. (ret) Moti Regev, founder of Canvelo, together with Yoram Aranstein, CEO
of the Hapoel Sport Association, Prosper Ben-Hemo, president of Hapoel, and Avi
Nisankorn, president of the Histadrut and Guy SImchi, a graduate of the IGDCB and head of the department for employing persons with disabilities in the Histadrut.
General (ret) Moti Regev visited the center while riding in the area. He discovered two tandem bicycles that were being used by volunteers to ride with graduates of the center. Moti's idea of expanding the tandem biking activities soon became a reality. His idea and initiative led to the
establishment of "Canvelo" – the Center's tandem biking club.
On Friday Canvelo celebrated its 10th anniversary with a ride through the Ben Shemen forest. THis year the JNF has begun a project of planting and establishing a special grove for the blind in the forest and they are now in the process of building a special biking trail for tandem bikes called "Tovim Hashnayim" or "Two is Great". All three Canvelo biking clubs from the center, Sharon area, and north participated in the ride, which took the bikers over rugged trails that climbed and descended through the forest. A picnic lunch was served at the end of the ride.
Canvelo offers a unique opportunity to engage in safe and supervised cycling activity, while traveling to different areas of the country and experiencing the feelings of pride, accomplishment, and belonging that group sports provide. In many ways tandem biking is similar to working with a guide dog - involving the same skills of communication, trust, and cooperation between the two members of each tandem team that are so important when working with a guide dog. The sighted volunteers who ride with their blind teammates are an outstanding example of the volunteering spirit - devoting themselves to making it possible for blind and visually impaired riders to get out and cycle.
Many members of the Canvelo cycling clubs will be participating in the Sportiada in Eilat, where teams from various companies and organizations will compete in a wide variety of sports events. This year the Sportiada will feature a tandem biking race for the first time.
We wish Canvelo many more kilometers of biking together and making the sport of cycling accessable for blind and visually impaired riders.
Gadi placed 9th in the race with a time of 3:05:25. This was Yarkoni's second time participating in the Paralympic Games. His record for the Marathon run is 2:48:56. He came in 13th place in the marathon in London, finishing in 3:01:51, and ran the New York Marathon with Noach Braun in 2010.

Gadi ran the marathon in Rio tethered to his trainer, Yosef Gazacho, who ran alongside him or behind him throughout the marathon. Escort runners are not allowed to run in front of a blind runner in order that they not pull them forward in any way.

Yarkoni, 41, lost his vision in 1993 while fighting against the Hizballah in Lebanon.
He is a graduate of the center who received his first guide dog in 1996. He was partnered with his fourth guide dog Butch, a yellow Labrador, in November of 2015.

We are proud of Gadi and the other Israeli athletes and their fine accomplishments! Kol Hakavod!
The
central club of Canvelo has just returned from a week-long biking excursion to
Slovenia. The group consisted of 13
sighted riders, 9 blind riders, and several single bikers – 27 riders in
all. The first three days of the trip
were in an area east of the capital city of Lubiana, and the final three days
were in Bled in the western area of the country. The routes took the bikers over scenic
mountains and valleys.

Eli
Yablonek, one of the blind riders who took part in the excursion, summarized
the trip in one word: "Terrific!"
Eli described the week as the best excursion the group has had so
far. "There was a lot of
comeraderie, a great atmosphere, and wonderful routes." Eli also commended the organizers Moti Regev,
Tova Yanovsky, and Roni Dik as well as the volunteers who were extremely
helpful throughout the trip and Ilan Sivan who maintained the tandem bikes
throughout the trip (without a single flat tire!) . Eli particularly enjoyed taking his guide dog
Glen along. "There was lots of
togetherness and a great atmosphere.
We're waiting for next year!"

This year Ronit Shachar's first grade class at the A.D. Gordon School in Herzliya decided to do something different - they opted, together with their parents, to donate half of the birthday money to charity. After searching on the Internet for a suitable charity, preferably something having to do with dogs, they found us.

Yesterday Bracha brought Dinka to Ronit's 1st grade class to speak to the children and to thank them for their contribution of NIS 3600. These kids not only know a lot more about the importance of guide dogs for the blind, but have also assimilated the importance of giving to others. Kol Hakavod to Ronit, the parents, and the first graders! The card says: "We, the pupils of the first grade class of the A.D. Gordon School, present you with this contribution that we collected from our birthday fund throughout the year - NIS 3600. We ask that you use this money for guide dogs to help the blind. Thank you for your cooperation!

Trainers and instructors at the center undergo a three – year training
period. The training course and
assignments are determined by the International Guide Dog Federation and
include numerous learning tasks. One of
these tasks is to spend 24 hours blindfolded and to perform daily tasks and
navigate without seeing.

Yoav and Hilla, two future instructors in training at the center, spent
24 hours blindfolded. They stayed in the
guest rooms at the center, received a guide dog to work with, and experienced –
for a short time – what our clients cope with when they arrive at the center to
receive a guide dog.

Hila described her experiences during the 24 hours she spent
blindfolded:

Before the exercise began I decided that I would enjoy the exercise,
undertake the difficulties in a positive way, and that I would relate to the
entire task as a learning experience.

The task began at lunch on the first day. It was pleasant, but challenging to eat
without being able to see. I was
reminded of all the meals during which I sat with people during courses.

I found the task of getting
organized in my room extremely helpful.
I was immediately aware that it would be extremely important to make
sure to keep everything in a precise place.

When they brought my dog Diva
into my room I was able to experience how clients feel when they meet their dog
for the first time. I wanted to make
contact with her, but my inability to see made me feel somewhat alienated. It is easier to sense the dog's presence if
it approaches you immediately.

I felt a lack of control
while riding in the car blindfolded. I
realized just why Roee makes sure to tell clients where we are going when we
are driving to town during the course.
Walking down an unfamiliar street with Diva was a wonderful empowering
experience. During the second day we
took another route, and it was a good walk at the right pace. There was a busy street next to me and every
truck and cyclist that passed me by and every change in Diva's pace scared
me. For a moment I forgot my abilities
as a trainer and dealt with the situation as a client. The other exercises were very interesting and
offered me more tools, knowledge, and experiences for understanding
clients. These exercises helped me
understand how to deal with busy intersections and crosswalks, as well as the
importance of using one's sense of hearing.

Netanel El Baz, a certified trainer and mobility
instructor at the center, gave me a mobility lesson using a white mobility cane
that was extremely enlightening. I felt
that the cane was much less comfortable than a guide dog, but I understood how
convenient a cane is, since it can be folded up and opened when needed.

The experience of living
blindfolded for a day was extremely positive, and I think that it is essential
for anyone working in the profession.
Coping with what our clients experience – even for a short time –
strengthens and intensifies empathy, tolerance, and awareness - all traits that
a guide dog mobility instructor needs.
The 24 hours that I spent without seeing helped me better understand that
people who are blind take nothing for granted.
Even the smallest things require a lot of thought as well as physical
and mental adapting. The experience gave
me valuable tools as a future trainer and instructor.
