Yariv, Eli, and Glen in Toronto
Eli Yablonek with his guide dog Glen and Yariv Melamed, a senior trainer at the center recently returned from a trip to Toronto. The trip was particularly significant because it was the first such fundraising tour in which an instructor from the center took part together with a graduate. Since Yariv was both Eli's instructor and Glen's trainer, his presence was particularly helpful. "Yariv often walked on the street slightly behind me just like instructors do during training," explained Eli.
Yariv also lived in Toronto and attended the Bialik School, where he and Eli met with students.
The trip included many events that placed emphasis upon awareness, fund and friend-raising, and information about how guide dogs are raised and trained. At one of the schools Eli and Yariv decided to do more than just lecture, and Yariv prepared an obstacle course in the gymnasim and led students through it blindfolded.
One special event during the tour was the premiere of a 27-minute film about the IGDCB delegation to the March of the Living in Poland at the Habomin Congregation of Eli Rubenstein.
"All the events were well-attended and well planned, and we made a lot of new contacts," reported Eli. "The atmosphere was really excellent and we were extremely well-received by the community in Toronto."
Another event took place in a pub and was attended by 120 people, who made generous donations and enjoyed jazz music.
Thanks to Sara Gasbriel, who planned the trip, and to Ayal Lesh, who will be replacing Sara as Director of the Friends Organization in Toronto. We wish you many more successful tours in the future!

Our Two Delegations This Week
Two different delegations have set out on missions this week from the Center: The first is the annual mission to Poland. The mission, which is the fourth such trip sponsored by the Center, consists of six guide dog users accompanied by escorts and their guide dogs, and is led by Amir Hiskel, an experienced guide who specializes in the history of the Holocaust. Martin Segal, Director of the British Friends of the IGDCB, joined the group from London for the duration of the week. The objective of the mission is to enable clients from the center to visit historic sites in Poland and to learn about this tragic period in the history of the Jewish People. Another delegation set out from the nortnern town of Metulla this week headed for the southern tip of the country on tandem bicycles. The group of six tandem teams has embarked on a four-day ride along the entire length of the country to raise awareness and to meet the challenge of the 500-kilometer ride. The event is the first of several events that will mark the 10th anniversary of the formation of Canvelo. Meanwhile this week at the center five new clients are beginning an instruction course with Roee, Hilla, and Yael. We wish everyone much success in their new partnerships! National Community Service workers have always been an important asset to the center. These young people contribute to the center from the aspects of manpower and social contact with the community. Six new community service workers joined the center staff in September: EIlon, Shaked, Ravid, Tamar, Haviva, and Inbar. Eilon works at the reception desk in the office, while the five young women have joined the staff in the kennels. We wish all six young people success in their new jobs and hope they enjoy their time with us!

The British are Here!
One of the most important aspects of producing high-quality guide dogs is to improve and diversify our breeding stock. For this reason guide dog schools throughout the world often exchange dogs, puppies, and genetic material to ensure high quality diverse genetic characteristics.
As part of this effort, this week four new "olim" arrived in Israel. The four young immigrants are Mazie, Valerie, Vy, and Milo. The four puppies came from the Guide Dog Association in Great Britain, and they arrived from London accompanied by Martin Segal, Director of our U.K. Friends. They're only three months old, but we hope they will have a promising future as guide dogs or as breeding dogs here at the Center.
We want to extend a big thank you to Martin Segal for bringing them, to El Al for flying the dogs to Israel, and to all the puppy raisers and volunteers who made their arrival possible!
Photos show the puppies with their foster families in Great Britain, and with Noach and Orna here in Israel.

Summer Visitors
Last Monday, August 17th was a day in which we once more enjoyed the close contact between the IGDCB and its friends in Great Britain. The Head Rabbi of Great Britain, Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, visited and toured the center with his family, accompanied by Martin Segal, Director of the British Friends, Noach, Dennis, and Bracha. The rabbi, who is a person with low vision, expressed solidarity and identification with the center and its work, and promised to increase awareness of the center among the Jewish community in England.
Other guests at the center this week included the Cohen family from Montreal, whose daughter Sara is celebrating her Bat Mitzvah and working on a project to raise funds for the center. The same day Noach hosted Rabbi Bob Alper, an old friend who married Noach and Orna during the time they spent in the United States. Despite the 40-degree temperatures, everyone toured the kennels and puppy house.
Next week, August 23-29t the Center will be closed. We wish everyone a pleasant vacation!

"Fun Day" - The Staff Escaping the Heat
Last Sunday the entire staff took a break from training walks with the dogs, wotk in the kennels, daily tasks in the office and campus, and left for a "Fun Day". We all fled from the intenst heat of August in Israel and escaped to the cool indoors of "Cinema City" in north Tel Aviv near the Glilot Junction. The day began with breakfast in the VIP cafeteria. We then entered the theater where we heard a lecture about the advanr=tages of incorporating humor into our everyday working lives, and several members of the staff staged a humorous scene of dealing with a crisis at the center. After a group photo (See below), we settled down with cups of popcorn to watch "Southglove". We then returned to the 95-degree heat outdoors, work, and routine. Thanks to Eli Ben-Boher for the photo!
Meanwhile, the center is hosting dozens of guests, including Martin Segal, Director of the British Friends, Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, the Chief Rabbi of England, teens on the Diller exchange program, and numerous families, donors, Bar and Bat Mitzvah students, and guests from Israel and abroad. Everyone walks around the campus in the summer heat, still enjoying the dogs and the puppies in the puppy house, drinking plenty of water, looking for shade, and trying to keep cool!

Shalom and Best of Luck to Sagit Kirson!
Last Tuesday the staff and volunteers held a special evening at the center to say farewell to Sagit Kirson, who is relocating with her family to San Hose, California. Sagit has worked for nearly six years as co-ordinator for the volunteers at the Center, and was responsible for mobilizing volunteers and organizing numerous projects. Sagit's work brought about the involvement of many dedicated volunteers who help at the center on a daily basis and with special projects. "It's hard for me to express in words what the Center means to me and particularly, who our volunteers are." Sagit expressed her thanks to the staff, who "…Were willing to meet every request she made, even if it meant getting up at 04:00 AM to organize events such as "Ro'im Rahok. I hope you will continue to light the way for the Center, the staff, and our wonderful dogs with the power of your personality." The event was very emotional, and more than a few tears were shed, but we all wish Sagit and her family success in their new venture in California! Photos:Eli Ben-Boher)

Summer Festivities for ELIYA and Ofek L'Yeladeinu
July began with two gala events for blind and visually impaired children and their families at the Center. The first, held on July 3rd, was the annual end of the school year event held for children of the ELIYA kindergarten in Petach Tikva. The kids were busy riding buddy bikes, jumping on inflatable playground equipment, modeling with play dough, and blowing soap bubbles. A great beginning for the hot summer! The second event, held on July 13th, was the annual "Happening" with "Ofek L'Yeladeinu" – (Horizons for Our Children). The kids enjoyed jumping on inflatable playground equipment, baking pita bread, riding buddy bikes and tandems, and putting on makeup. A singer and guitar player provided entertainment as well. One of the most important objectives of this event is to get kids acquainted with guide dogs, and the children enjoyed the biggest attraction of all – a chance to visit with the dogs in the kennels. The event was organized by the "Ofek" tribe from the local scouts group from Modi'in. Below are pictures from the two events.

Yutah working in the Knesset
In previous years guide dogs have been presented in the Knesset and M.K. have had the opportunity to experience walking an obstacle course with a guide dog blindfolded. This year, as in previous years, blind and visually impaired Israelis marked "Blind Day" with various activities to boost public awareness, including a bike ride and hike in the Ben Shemen Forest. However, Yutah, a golden retriever puppy, will be walking the hallways of the Knesset and boosting public awareness throughout the year. Yutah is being raised by Eran Yussub, who is an intern for M.K. Ilan Gilon (Meretz). Yutah arrives at work each day together with Yussub, wearing her blue puppy coat. M.K. Gilon has noted that she works hard, and is already getting a few bills ready. M.K. Gilon is a person with a disability, and uses a cane or motorized scooter to move about the Knesset. He is now the chairman of the Knesset sub-committee for accessibility. "We don't say "handicapped," noted M.K. Gilon. "Every person has his or her strong and weak points." We wish all our puppies who are with their puppy raisers lots of success, and hope they will all be guide dogs in the next year and a half or two!

Walls that Only a Dog Can Penetrate
The stories of the special relationships of love and trust between guide dog handlers and their dogs are heartwarming. The stories of the relationships between children with special needs and their companion dogs are no less exciting. D. is a child who was unable to communicate with people around him. A year and a half ago, when D. was two and a half years old, he. was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. "The news was hard to take, but we were not surprised," explained D.'s father. "We always knew that D. was a special child, but we could no longer deny the reality. D. was unable to communicate with people around him. At the age of 4 D. still did not speak, and had difficulty meeting strangers and encountering unfamiliar places. He is also extremely sensitive to noise. D. built walls around himself, and lived in his own world - alone, introverted, and closed off. Several months ago D.'s parents read about the Center's career change dogs on an Internet forum for parents of children on the autism spectrum. They learned with excitement that dogs who are not suitable to be guide dogs for the blind are available for adoption by families of children with special needs. After consulting with professionals, they called the Center and were put on the waiting list to adopt a career - change dog. The day the family received the long-awaited phone call, they were extremely excited. Their first meeting at the Center was an experience in itself. "At last the moment came when we met our new dog C. for the first time. There's no doubt that it was love at first sight. We could not have asked for anything more!" remarked D.'s father. The first meeting between D's three siblings and their new dog was exciting, but D. made no attempt to make contact with C. His parents feared that even she would not be able to penetrate the walls that D. had built around himself. That night they placed a mattress on the floor for her next to D.'s bed, but he still did not acknowledge her presence. The next morning the parents awoke to an amazing sight: D. was lying on the mattress next to C. with his head resting on her back. The parents could not hold back their tears of excitement and joy. Since then the friendship between D. and his dog C. has grown steadily stronger. It appears that a charming, loving dog has succeeded in breaking down the walls that people have not been able to penetrate! Photo: D. with his dog C.: Love growing stronger all the time

Visitors from Near and Far

A World They never Experienced Before
On April 20th 150 young people from Mexico were hosted in the athletic stadium in Hadar Yosef. The youths had recently participated in the "March of the Living in Auschwitz on Holocaust Memorial Day. The young people were mostly students whose age ranged in age from 18-25. The activities in the stadium were aimed at familiarizing them with accessibility for persons with disabilities in Israel. The Canvelo biking club set up a booth and brought seven tandem bicycles from Beit Oved. Volunteers from Canvelo Merkaz and Canvelo HaSharon acted as captains. The students were divided into groups of 30 students each and each group visited four different booths that offered four different activities: riding a tandem bicycle, riding a hand-powered bike for persons with orthopedic disabilities, and meeting persons with hearing impairments. Students visiting the tandem booth received explanations about the essence of tandem biking for blind stokers, and the role of guide dogs and the IGDCB where the dogs are bred and trained to lead blind clients. The students experienced riding a tandem blindfolded, and not only cooperated but also enjoyed the experience. We exposed the stdents a world with which they were not familiar. We would not be surprised if any of them decide to become involved in helping the blind in the future!

Saying Goodbye to Mathew Gould, the British Ambassador
Last week a festive event was held at the center to say farewell to the British Ambassador, Mathew Gould, who is completing his term of dury in Israel next month. Mathew and his family raised a dog named Sophie, who did not qualify as a guide dog, and are returning with her to England next month. Despite the hot weather, the 80 guests enjoyed congregating on the patio together with the center staff and graduates. The guests then entered the auditorium for a ceremony and farewell speeches and greetings. Noach opened the ceremony, followed by Bracha B|en Avraham, who was the first graduate of the center to visit the U.K. with her guide dog Dinka. Other speakers included Martin Segal, chairman of the British Friends, Haim Schwards, and Mathew Gould. Noach presented Mathew and his wife Ceilia with a gift from the Center: a set of wooden candlesticks crafted by hand by Moti Regev from the wood of the pecan trees at the Center. Following the ceremony many of the guests from the Embassy had the opportunity to tour the center and to texperience walking with the dog-sim on the obstacle course. We wish Mathew and his family success on their return home, and hope to strengthen the ties with our friends in the British Isles in the future! Good luck to all six clients who began the course of April 2015!
